Project Start: PEMPIRE officially launched

The EU-funded project PEMPIRE (PEM Electrolysis: Pushing towards Significant Improvements Reaching Extended Performance and Lifetime) officially started in January 2026. The project brings together a strong European consortium to develop next-generation proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers with significantly improved performance, durability, and sustainability. By advancing innovative materials, system solutions and sustainability-driven design, PEMPIRE aims to support the large-scale deployment of clean hydrogen technologies and contribute to climateneutral energy systems and industrial processes.

Successful Kick-Off Meeting at Fraunhofer ISE

The PEMPIRE consortium met for its Kick-Off Meeting at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany. The first day focused on welcoming the partners and setting the foundation for successful project implementation. Following an introduction by the project coordination team at Fraunhofer ISE, all partners presented their roles and contributions, providing a comprehensive overview of the planned implementation and collaboration structure.

A particular highlight of the first day was a dedicated session by the project officer from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, who introduced the partnership’s goals, objectives and key aspects relevant for project implementation under Horizon Europe, notably for projects implemented under the Clean Hydrogen Partnership umbrella. The day concluded with a consortium dinner on the Schlossberg, offering an excellent opportunity for informal exchange and team building, accompanied by a scenic view over Freiburg.

Technical Exchange and Lab Visits on day two

The second day of the Kick-Off Meeting was dedicated to the technical core of the project. Interactive working sessions enabled an intensive exchange of ideas between the technical partners and led to concrete plans for the upcoming tasks and collaboration over the next project phases.

In the afternoon, the partners visited several laboratories at Fraunhofer ISE, including the PEM electrolyser testing facilities. The lab tour also offered insights into other ongoing research and development activities at Fraunhofer ISE, such as photovoltaics, fuel cells and alternative electrolysis technologies, further strengthening the technical exchange within the consortium.

Following a successful project launch, PEMPIRE has started its implementation phase with a committed and wellaligned consortium. The project will continuously advance PEM electrolysis technologies and regularly communicate progress and results to stakeholders and the wider public.
